Why Baker Defensive Tactics Was Created
Baker Defensive Tactics was not created to promote a martial art. It was created because professionals kept asking for something the martial arts industry was not providing.
For more than four decades, Alan Baker has studied a wide range of martial arts, combat systems, defensive tactics, weapons-based training methods, and performance disciplines. Rather than spending a lifetime inside a single system, he pursued knowledge wherever it could be found, constantly studying, testing, refining, and comparing different approaches.
Over time, military personnel, law enforcement officers, executive protection agents, security professionals, and organizations began approaching him with the same request:
“Don’t teach us a martial art. Build us a solution.”
What they needed was not another collection of techniques borrowed from a traditional system. They needed training that accounted for their environment, equipment, policies, legal responsibilities, public scrutiny, and operational realities.
Traditional martial arts were never designed around those requirements. Most systems do not concern themselves with how an application looks on camera, how it will be viewed by a jury, how it aligns with organizational policy, or how it impacts the safety of a third party.
